Hunt for art to take centre stage at Coastival
The deadline is fast approaching for any local artists to put forward ideas to create new pieces of work to be commissioned for next year’s Scarborough arts festival Coastival.
Coastival organiser Create has got funding for four new £5,000 art commissions on the theme ‘Exploring the Yorkshire Coast’.
Local artists and arts companies have until the end of the month to put forward their ‘exciting and innovative’ bids for the commissions.
Director Wendy Holroyd said Create had secured Arts Council funding for four new commissions for artists, working in any art form, to create new work in Scarborough for Coastival.
“This is a very exciting opportunity for any artists and arts companies to come up with something special to secure the £5,000 commission and be a part of Coastival 2016,” she said.
“We’re particularly keen to see work with strong artistic content and visual presence and impact, which can engage with diverse audiences,” she said.
“We’re looking for professional, practising artists or companies with an aptitude for working in community settings and a proactive, collaborative approach that will engage a wide range of participants.
“In particular, we want these new commissions to push artistic boundaries and respond to the Scarborough landscape.”
The deadline for submissions is 31st May 2015.
Individual artists or companies are eligible to apply and each of the four chosen will receive a fee of £5,000 for the delivery of the commission and presentation of the work at Coastival in February next year.
The fee covers all artistic, production and travel costs. Create will support companies to apply for further funding from other sources if required. Technical, administrative and marketing support will be provided.

Coastival holds its mini, one or two-day festival on alternate years to its main, three-day event. Next year will see a return to the three-day format.
